Description of the plant:
BARLARIA STRIGOSA Willd. is a small unarmed shrub up to 1.2 m high; branches fulvous-stigose upwards. Leaves 14 cm or more, ovate or elliptic, acute or acuminate, fulvous-strigose on the nerves beneath. Flowers in dense fulvous-hairy unilateral spikes, often crowded at the tops of the branches, corolla blue, 3.7-5 cm long, funnel-shaped in the upper half, lobes ovate. Capsule 18 mm long.

Using information:
The plant is bitter, pungent, mild antiseptic; useful in ulcers, skin diseases, leucoderma, pains, itching, inflammations, bronchitis, and diseases of the teeth. The root is used by the Santals as a remedy for cough.

Chemical constituents:
The plant contains ß- & γ-sitosterol (Asolkar et al., 1992).

Distribution:
Forests of Chittagong and Chittagong Hill Tracts.
